Mike Taylor

Mike Taylor

Mike Taylor the co-founder of Strala, and our resident healer. He studied mind-body medicine at Harvard, and complementary medicine at Oxford. Mike has practiced Eastern movement and healing, including tai chi and qi gong, for more than 30 years.

In his younger years, Mike challenged centuries of reasonable and well-tested martial traditions in hundreds of competitions, by applying unruly imagination to a world where rules were unbreakable. His record established the strength of finding your own way in your own body, rather than copying the techniques of other people’s traditions. As he got older, he continued on to medical applications of the mind-body connection in university. After running into walls with standard medical practice in the U.S. and England, Mike left his healthcare roots. The internet was just getting started, so he joined a web company, and then founded a few more.

Through Strala, Mike has found his way back to health care done right: helping people let go of stress in their bodies and minds, and become their own best caregivers and creators. Mike climbs mountains and explores the backcountry on ski and snowshoe in his spare time.

The Minneapolis Yoga Conference is an exploration of what yoga is. It is designed to serve the community not as a proclamation of answers, but instead as an unending set of questions. Our primary aim is to explore the practice of yoga in an open, welcoming space for everyone in the yoga community. We embrace and celebrate the different and unique perspectives across the wider yoga community, so that together we can feel can feel a unity that is all too often missing. We are a conference that accepts, embraces and celebrates everyone for exactly where they are in their yogic journey, no matter where they are.

For the 2018 conference we have once again curated a group of world-class presenters, providing countless offerings and hundreds of available workshop hours. Whether you’ve been practicing for twenty days or twenty years, the 2018 Minneapolis Yoga Conference will have something for you.

Closing Ceremony with Marni Sclaroff: Nurture your Nature

A picture of Closing Ceremony with Marni Sclaroff: Nurture your Nature

Your soul is your essence, your nature, your wisdom, and the ground of who you are. Modern life and culture often pull us away from the soul, and we feel dry, tired, and disconnected from our true knowing. Living in relationship with soul, awakens us to our inherent connection with All That Is. It gives us access to our intuition, our vitality, our creativity, our inherent juiciness and our imaginative wisdom. This way of "coming home" to ourselves truly inspires our lives and uplifts our connections to our selves and to each other. In this workshop we will feed the soul through inspired and heart-centered asana practice, storytelling, guided meditation, and group discussion. You will leave feeling more grounded, inspired, connected, and more in tune with your soul's wisdom and gifts.

Presenter: Tanmatra Chikitsa in Yoga Therapy: Awaken the inner pharmacy Headshot
Friday, 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Tanmatra Chikitsa in Yoga Therapy: Awaken the inner pharmacy

Indu Arora

Tanmatra Chikitsa is the future of Yoga Therapy. It is the art and science of utilizing the sensory pathways for awakening the inner pharmacy. When we are bombarded with all kinds of sensory stimulus whether we want it or not, like it or not, the attention to our senses and their interaction is more crucial then ever. What we see, eat, touch, smell and taste matters not just to the senses but to the mind. In this type of practice, our five sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, skin and tongue) and their functions (to see, hear, smell, touch and taste) are utilized carefully for creating a therapeutic influence in our body, mind and breath. (The carefully handpicked Tanmatra Chikitsa kit is available online at Yogsadhna.com for pre purchase.)
Content:

● What is Tanmatra Chikitsa

● Purpose of Tamnatra Chikitsa

● How to utilize individual sense modality (sound, taste, smell, touch and sight) for healing

● How to incorporate Tanmatras in your everyday Yoga practice

This workshop is a promise to a new approach to your practice and to Yoga Therapy.

We all feel so good after a little time on our yoga mats. But, then, we leave the yoga studio, and get back to our "real lives", and somehow the "yoga buzz" goes away. This is because most yoga classes are teaching us how to practice on the mat, but not in our daily lives. How do we bring the magic of yoga to our work, our relationships, our home life? Most of the yoga studios offer teacher trainings to students who want advance their practices, but what if you don't want to be a yoga teacher? In this revolutionary workshop, Marni will guide you to the magic of your everyday yoga. You will see how no matter what your life situation is, you can practice yoga. You will learn how to create daily rituals and practices that support your life and your relationships. You will explore your unique life challenges and learn to see them as teachers. You will uncover your special soul magic that only you can live. You will leave with a much deeper understanding of how yoga is exactly who you are.

Anam Cara - A Gathering of Soul Friends

Leo Rising

One of my favorite poets and inspirational leaders is Irish born John O’ Donohue. His affinity for keeping Celtic Spirituality current in our world, shared themes with my personal spiritual practices and accelerated work with cultural equality. The word “Anam Cara” is gaelic phrasing which translates to Soul Friend. Each of us are destined to experience harmonious relationships, cross-culturally, some harmonize and enlighten us, others challenge and stretch us past our normative thinking so that we can progress past old limitations of character. Our work in this day intensive is to embrace our inner intimacies through partner acrobatics, dynamic healing arts, threatre games, group mantra, and dynamic soul gazing exercises which will integrate the groups divine resonance for one special day of unification.Given the amazing promise of America, it’s time we receive the blessing of our Anam Cara, the Irish believe once you have attracted your soul friend you have arrived at that most sacred place: Home.

Presenter: Women’s Kundalini Intensive Headshot
Friday, 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Women’s Kundalini Intensive

Nicole Nardone

Adi Shakti is the first, primal force of the Universe. It is the feminine, the creative energy that births all things. She is the delta of creation through which all life flows. The feminine force gives rise to dark and light, fierceness and tenderness, power and grace. This primal power is rising through the earth, through our communities, and through our bodies as women. In this intensive, we’ll dive into the philosophy and practices aimed at awakening the Adi Shakti force (the feminine force), understanding, integrating, and celebrating it.

Yogi Bhajan gave many practices and lectured at length on the importance of women knowing who and what they truly are. This intensive will dive into many of the sacred practices held only for women. Kriyas, meditations, mantras, and lifestyle practices aimed at cultivating the creative force, compassion, and grace of woman. These practices are specifically designed for balancing a woman’s hormonal system, nervous system, and fine tuning and amplifying her subtle energy system.

In the first part of our day, we will dive into the seat of unconditional love. We’ll explore practices to balance the nervous system, bring healing and balance to the heart chakra, and practices that activate the Arcline (one of a woman’s energetic superpowers). When Adi Shakti is awakened in these centers, the fragrant river of love flows through the body, into our relationships, and into all of life. We are able to fill our own cup first and give from overflow, rather than compulsively giving to others first. Habitual, learned nervous system patterns of pranic intake/outake, giving/receiving love are recalibrated, putting us in right flow with the flow of love.

During the second part of our day, we will focus on the creative/sexual aspect of Adi Shakti. According to the yogis, the main use of the sexual energy is to repair and rejuvenate all the organs of the body. This is said to bring about great and profound healing. We’ll address what typically blocks the flow of this sacred energy. We’ll practice a kriya and meditations to awaken and balance this powerful, sacred sexuality of woman, and channel this potent energy into deep and regenerative self-healing and spiritual awakening. This practice can also powerfully open the flow of sexual energy if it’s been blocked. In awakening this basic sacredness of our sexuality and creativity as women, we are lifted into our true power, we drip with love, and we are sovereign. From this place, we heal, we create, we love, we hold the world in balance. Adi Shakti Adi Shakti Adi Shakti Namo Namo.

This intensive is for anyone who identifies as a woman.

Presenter: Ten Yogic Bodies of Kundalini Yoga Headshot
Saturday, 8:00am - 10:00am

Ten Yogic Bodies of Kundalini Yoga

Nicole Nardone

"If you understand that you are Ten Bodies, and you are aware of those Ten Bodies, and you keep them in balance, the whole Universe will be in balance with you." ~ Yogi Bhajan

Explore one of the pillars of Kundalini Yoga. The 10 bodies are a yogic map of the human system. They include one physical body, three mental bodies, and six energy bodies. When we understand and have an experience of these ten bodies, we invoke the power, the love, the creativity of the Universe within us. We come into balance with all that is.

The three mental bodies give us the opportunity to harness the power of the mind as a crystal that captures divine light, wisdom, and clarity. The six energy bodies allow us a deeper understanding of the subtle and powerful currents that shape our reality. These ten bodies take us beyond the realm of the chakras and into the infinite.

In this class, we will dive into each yogic body separately through lecture, practice (kriyas and meditations), and self reflection. You’ll have an experience of each, individual yogic body from the inside, out. You’ll also be given specific practices to balance each body if you wish to take your practice home with you.

Mind Study Series 1: Whole-being Well-being

Molly McManus

Whole-being Well-being – Understanding the Koshas to build a Resilient Life: Yoga provides us with incredible maps and practical tools to understand ourselves and to move us in the direction of whole-being wellbeing that encompasses not just physical health but, mental and spiritual resilience as well. In this first of the Mind Study Series workshops we will explore the Pancha Kosha Model for understanding the dimensions of the human system and how a multidimensional approach is essential for sustained wellbeing.

Yogic perspective looks at the diseases of stress and the suffering of everyday life as a pattern of constriction. These constrictions are thought to take place in the five layers of the Koshas. The Koshas are aspects of each individual that range from the grossest layer that directly relates to the physical body, to the most subtle which relates to the layer most closely associated with soul or spirit. If there is a constriction at one layer, it will affect the whole system and cause suffering. Thus, the importance of working within a multi-layered approach.

Workshop is perfect for both individuals wanting to find more wellbeing for themselves or for Yoga Teachers or Therapists looking to incorporate this work in private or group sessions.

Workshop Abstract:

Presentations includes PowerPoint presentation, detailed hand out on yogic maps and models, lecture, guided breakout discussion and some experiential learning.

Presenter: Yoga and Racial Justice Headshot

Yoga and Racial Justice

James Ford

People come to yoga for many different reasons, one of which is to checking out versus checking in. The difference is so subtle that we usually don't even know we are doing it. This is also referred to as spiritual bypassing and it shields us from the truth, it disconnects us from our feelings, and helps us avoid the big picture.

There are many people who believe that we have progressed as a society but by tuning into current events there seems to be a chasm between progress and reality. Now is the time to put our bodies in mindful action toward ahimsa (non-violence). Now is the time to use yoga to help reveal the samskaras (Impressions, ideas, or actions; taken together that make up our conditioning) of racism, oppression and injustice and create new ways of thinking, being, and living. Conversations about race and racism can be difficult and uncomfortable, but allowing ourselves to feel that discomfort without becoming defensive or withdrawn is the only place to start.

This workshop will offer a practice of asanas, pranayama, and meditation that will allow us to be present and open. We will explore our roles in how we are potentially perpetuating racism, oppression, and injustice, and identify ways we can begin to form new samskaras around deconstructing our ideas and behaviors cause himsa(violence) to others.

The Yamas and Niyamas are yoga's ten ethical guidelines and comprise the first two limbs of Yoga's eightfold path, teaching the tools for skillful living. These guidelines help guide a yoga practitioner’s life and bring greater clarity and understanding to everyday interactions in life, these gems are the foundation to all forms of yoga.

Ann Maxwell is delighted to bring the Yamas and Niyamas to Minneapolis Yoga Conference! Ann will be sharing her wisdom on teaching Yoga Philosophy and incorporating it into your offerings or teaching schedule. From Yoga North’s Book written by Deborah Adele The Yamas and Niyamas, Ann will help explore how to structure, teach and encourage philosophy in your studio. Ann’s experience with these practices over the last two decades at Yoga North Studio in Duluth and has given her first hand experience on how having an ethical system helps bring congruency between body, mind and spirit and between one another. Learn how the Yamas and Niyamas can support your most authentic self both on and off your yoga mat and become skillful at sharing these guidelines with others.

Presenter: Kundalini Secrets for Radiance Headshot
Sunday, 8:00am - 10:00am

Kundalini Secrets for Radiance

Nicole Nardone

The practice of Kundalini Yoga was kept secret for ages. It was handed down teacher to student as a way to protect these powerful practices. These yogic secrets were held only for royal classes. That’s no longer the case. Each of us are being called to rise.

In this workshop, we explore practices aimed at what Kundalini Yoga calls the Radiant Body. The Radiant Body, and the other subtle energy fields that support it, call forth a courage and radiance from within you. It’s the regal brightness that shines when you choose to enthrone the Soul. When this subtle energy field is strong, you are magnetic, things flow to you with little effort, and your life is held and carried by forces beyond understanding. There is a flowing vitality where there was once fear or a sense of shrinking from life. There is empowerment without a need to disempower others. There is tremendous grace and trust in that grace.

In this workshop, we’ll explore kriyas, meditations, mantra, and lifestyle practices aimed at cultivating this Radiant Body. We’ll address what weakens it, and what strengthens it, and why it is important to be cultivating this subtle realm right now in our world.

A single practice like this can activate the Radiant Body in such a way that it will not go dormant again. However, the real work is in a committed practice to sustained radiance through our lives. Take home practices given to those who want them.

Part 1: Energy, Presence and Touch - Teaching yoga is more than calling out postures and creating sequences. As an instructor, your primary roll is to “hold space” for your students. This module focuses on developing a supportive and life-changing experience for yogis, while also enhancing your levels of keen awareness, observation, and timing, in order to effectively carry your students through a sacred journey of personal transformation. Learn how to understand, observe and perceive the body's subtle energy, directions of movement, clues of resistance, and internal blockages. During the Advanced Hands-On Assisting component, learn the principles of Thai Massage, nonjudgmental alignment for every body type, and active attention to and reading of body language as ways to enhance and create your own physical adjustments. Also, experience how voice, tone, language and nonverbal communication creates a vibration within the space.

Part 2: Threads of Folklore: Deities, Myths & Tales - Meet goddesses, gods, and spiritual guides from ancient cultures across the globe. Explore how to utilize folkloric tales in your classes, develop powerful, story-based themes, and design sequences that support and tell the story. Sunday, 8:00am - 10:00am

Yogadevotion

Cindy Senarighi

Asana is only one of the eight limbs of yoga but it is the limb that most western yogi’s identify with. We use our body to move toward a place where we can be calm, still and alert, savasana. Even if savasana wasn’t easy for you in the beginning once practiced it becomes a destination with asana as the vehicle. Many have said that when they reach that destination they experience something beyond themselves, something greater. Some call this something greater God, some are still exploring what that something greater is, and still, whether we understand it or not, the spiritual experience is healing. In this workshop we will explore the possibility of connecting to something greater than self that is healing and lived out in community. We will consider where religion, capital R or little r, has had an effect in our yoga practice or in our life. This will be a teaching time and we will practice, we will move, we will pause to integrate thought with experience…we will close in a beautiful savasana.

Presenter: Bhakti Shakti: Nectar For Your Soul Headshot

Bhakti Shakti: Nectar For Your Soul

Kimberly Hofner

“Shakti is the essence of Bliss; it is the power of Love. Bhakti, or Devotion, is the impetuous force of faith.” ~Devi Bhagavata

Yoga is both a state of conscious connection and a rich body of practices that guide us on our endless journey of Self-Realization. Asana (posture), Pranayama (breathing), Mudra and Bandha (control of the subtle forces), Shat Kriyas (cleansing the body-mind), Mantra Chanting, Visualizations, and many forms of Meditation all facilitate equanimity and awaken our true nature.

In Nectar For Your Soul we will ignite the eternal flame of Bhakti Shakti with a morning Sadhana that fluidly applies the Sacred Science of Yoga featuring soulful live music. Sri Patanjali teaches that “Yoga is the blocking (nirodha) of mental modifications (chitta vritti) so the seer (drashta)re-identifies with the Higher Self (Atman).” The Upanishads state the bridge between time and eternity is the Higher Self (Atman). Once we cross this bridge and realize the Oneness of Creation, there is no sense of other; the only identity we have is Divinity.

Deepen your personal practice and gently align with the Divine Consciousness. The Yogic Life is a Pathless Path, a flight from the Solitary to the Solitary, the illumined space between breaths where the Lover and the Beloved become Love itself. Let us sincerely practice the wisdom of the ancient Yogins in selfless dedication to all beings everywhere. Bring a journal/pen, comfy blanket/cushion and your dear heart. Namaste.
